The Ritz-Carlton in Toronto has something special in store for its guests – on display at the haute hotel’s signature restaurant Toca, are over 1,500 of resident-artist Jacqueline Poirier’s ‘Plart’. Plate art or ‘Plart’, as Jacqueline Poirier likes to call it, are one-of-a-kind hand painted ceramic plates, which depict images, scenes, characters and possibly everything under the sun. Here, these plates, one displayed at every setting of the 120-seat restaurant, serve the purpose of both adornment and intrigue, sparking interesting conversations at the tables. Using a different medium to display art, especially something that seems to fit so perfectly in a restaurant setting, Jacqueline manages to pleasantly surprise people with whimsical images on plates and their uncanny resemblance to the real thing.
Create what you love. Love what you create. I try to pull creativity from every aspect of my life.
I was pretty much born with paint on my hands! Over the years I have pursued my passion for the fine arts through many avenues, but it was around three years ago that I discovered the joy of working with ceramics and porcelain.
The Canadian plate artist whose custom designs include landscapes, portraits, animals and food, started working as a waitress at the Toronto hotel but soon became the in house-artist, all thanks to the success of her unique creations. Placed between knives and forks at the signature eatery, these plates greet guests as soon as they come in and are whisked away before food is served. While occasionally some guests request for customized plates, others who are awe-struck by these artworks purchase them right there and then. Available not just for the guests at the high-end hotel, you too can get your hands on one of her creations through her website.
