Flow Arts is a fast growing fitness and meditation practice that blends play, exercise and dance into a fun and healthful activity that moves the body, stills the mind and uplifts the spirit. The concept of Flow Arts is simple: learn to move in harmony with an inanimate object so that it becomes an animated expression of your body, and then flow with it in ways that look and feel totally awesome!
Flow Funktion, a brainchild of Shanti Trip and SOOT (School of Original Thought), hosts workshops for Fire Poi and Staff, a discipline that involves manipulation of objects on fire. Typically these objects have one or more wraps of wick, which are soaked in fuel and ignited. In Fire Poi,one of the Flow Art’s simplest and most common forms, you swing two small weights around on cords. The physical activity feels great and the challenge of the movement engages you to such an extent that everything else melts away. On the other hand, Staff is a freestyle, contact-based art form which takes a lot of its grace and movement from martial art forms like Bojutsu and Kalaripayattu.
Apart from the daredevilry and the intense aspect of it, Fire Twirling brings in a change from within. Those who have tried it have witnessed their lives change drastically, almost from the moment they start. It makes us decisive and make informed gut calls, which in turn makes it a seamless sail through life.
If you decide to become a part of this thrilling workshop, you get to learn to center the body with staff/poi as the anchor for a dance form that culminates with learning how to play with the fire-staff/fire poi. While going through an awesome experience you also get to know the world of fire professionals and former students, and their individual relationship with fire. At the end of the workshop, as a token of love; you shall be provided your own practice poi or staff. Woot! Woot!
Flow Funktion, along with hosting Fire-based activities, also works on promoting art as a social cause. With stalls for artworks, crafts and merchandise and of organic food and live musicians (Dub Station ‘Reggae Rajhas’ Special for the upcoming workshop) for the ambience, Flow Funktion enables a feel good factor along with delivering long-term healing habits.
