Portals are the kind of thing one expects to see in sci-fi movies only but Brooklyn-based graphic designer Victoria Siemer, also known as Witchoria (which is just plain awesome), begs to differ. She takes picturesque landscapes and suspends geometric shapes over them in her series of photo collages and manipulations called ‘Geometric Reflections’. The results are mesmerising images which look more like gateways to other dimensions than earthly landscapes.
Her photos are filled with clouds, fog and other spooky natural elements to add a touch of gloom to the landscapes. The use of geometric shapes is fascinating since their symmetry is a striking contrast to the wild, free-flowing mountains, trees and waves in the background. The photos don’t stop at environmental landscapes—there are a few city skylines too which look nothing short of enchanted.
It’s easy to be reminded of the movie Interstellar when you look at her images which we’ve compiled in the gallery below. Influenced by the concepts of emotional fragmentation and ‘fragmentation of the self’, Victoria Siemer impeccably translates into her work, these concepts she explored as a design student at the State University of New York, Buffalo. Her Instagram feed is a delight to browse through because of the quirky, pun-filled captions she adds to her posts.
Apart from this, her series ‘Human Error’ and ‘Illuminated’ are also absolutely wonderful. Some of her work is available for sale as prints on Society6. We believe that the sheer surprise of finding a geometric reflection above the landscape is what makes her work surreal.
